A SUPERMARKET ready meal maker will face festive season strikes unless it drops “abhorrent” plans to fire and rehire hundreds of workers, Unite said today.
Nearly 600 workers at Wrexham Oscar Mayer have backed escalating industrial action, voting 97 per cent in favour.
They have been striking since September against the company’s plans to fire and rehire them, which would slash pay by up to £3,000 a year.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Fire and rehire is appalling exploitation that needs to be banned outright.
“Oscar Mayer’s use of it brings shame on every company that stocks its products.”
Oscar Mayer is one of Britain’s major ready meal manufacturers, supplying Tesco, Asda, Greggs, Aldi, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s and the Co-op.
The next round of strike action takes place from November 28 to December 5.
Further strikes impacting supermarket Christmas supplies will be announced in the coming days.
The company has been contacted for comment.
