SENIOR government officials are to be questioned by MPs over Britain’s record levels of homelessness.

The public accounts committee will examine whether local authorities are receiving adequate support to address the growing demand for temporary accommodation.

They will also grill officials on how government will ensure value for money in tackling homelessness.

The latest National Audit Office report on the issue said cash-strapped local authorities face “unsustainable financial pressure” to meet the ever-increasing demand for temporary accommodation while central government departments are unlikely to achieve value for money in tackling homelessness.

The committee will question Sarah Healey, permanent secretary at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), on Monday.

They will also call as a witness the MHCLG’s director general Catherine Frances and its director for Homelessness and Rough Sleeping Penny Hobman.

From the Department for Work and Pensions, they will question director for poverty, families and disadvantage James Wolfe and director of housing and universal credit Jenan Hasan.
