GREECE: Syriza lost its status as the main opposition group in parliament today, when two of its MPs announced that they were quitting the left-wing party.

Their departure reduced Syriza's number of MPs to 29, fewer than the 31 seats held by the Panhellenic Socialist Movement.

One of the deputies, Theodora Tzakri, said: “My decision to become an independent legislator is an act of self-respect and self-worth in my political journey so far.”

FINLAND: Police said today that they had detained five suspects in connection with deadly violence in south-eastern Nigeria.

The police did not identify the suspects, only saying that a dual Finnish-Nigerian citizen, born in the 1980s, was under criminal investigation.

SERBIA: Eleven people have been arrested over a roof collapse at a railway station in the northern city of Novi Sad earlier this month that killed 15 people and severely injured two, prosecutors said today.

The suspects, who have not been identified, face charges of committing criminal acts against public security, causing public danger and irregular construction work, said a statement by the Higher Prosecutor’s Office in Novi Sad. 

PAKISTAN: Gunmen opened fire on passenger vehicles carrying Shi’ite Muslims in the restive north-west today, killing at least eight people and wounding others, police said.

The attack happened in Kurram, a district in the north-western Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province where clashes between majority Sunni Muslims and minority Shi’ites have killed dozens of people in recent months.

No-one has claimed responsibility, but Kurram has been a scene of sectarian violence in recent months.
