WELSH Labour conference delegates have backed a strategy for steel within a wider national industrial strategy — and to work with the UK government to deliver it.

Community union’s Reg Gutteridge told delegates he had worked in the steel industry for 30 years.

He spoke about the pivotal role the steel industry has played in Welsh life shaping the country’s identity and forging communities in Port Talbot, Llanelli, Newport and Shotton.

Mr Gutteridge explained steel would continue to be needed to build wind turbines, electric vehicles, or other forms of green infrastructure.

“You can’t build a greener economy without a healthy steel industry,” Mr Gutteridge said.

Economy Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Evans said Wales was at the heart of efforts to make Britain a green energy superpower.

She said: “We are already leading the way in how we deliver the net zero energy transition — hosting the first major offshore wind farm in north Wales and a focus on tidal stream and floating offshore wind.”
