CAMPAIGNERS called for radical measures today after a survey supported all children leaving school to speak the Welsh language confidently.
According to language campaign group, Cymdeithas yr Iaith, the survey results show the Welsh government needs to be more “radical” with plans for Welsh-medium education in proposed legislation.
More than half the people in a YouGov survey believe schools should aim to educate all pupils to become confident Welsh speakers, with a third disagreeing.
In the same survey, 39 per cent of people said they supported the principle that all schools in Wales should move to teaching through the medium of Welsh by 2050.
Cymdeithas yr Iaith’s Toni Schiavone said: “Currently, around 80 per cent of our children leave school without being able to use Welsh confidently.
“We are calling on Welsh language minister Mark Drakeford to make bold reforms … to ensure that the next generation of young people leave school with confidence in their Welsh.”
