CHINA: A driver killed 35 people and severely injured another 43 when he deliberately rammed his car into people exercising at a sports centre in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai, police said today.

Police had detained a man at the sports centre in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai following the ramming late on Monday, on the eve of the country’s premier aviation exhibition by the People’s Liberation Army that is hosted annually in the city.

Police identified the man only by his family name of Fan.

GERMANY: The German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was expected to ask for a vote of confidence in his government on December 16, paving the way for a new parliamentary election as early as February, German media reported today.

The move comes after the collapse of Germany’s three-party coalition last week. 

HAITI: Three airlines suspended flights to Haiti today after a passenger plane from the United States was hit by gunfire as it attempted to land in the capital Port-au-Prince.

Spirit Airlines 951 from Fort Lauderdale in Florida was diverted to the neighbouring Dominican Republic where it landed safely.

A flight attendant was slightly injured but no passengers were reported to have been hurt by the attack.

PAKISTAN: Worsening air pollution sickened an estimated 1.8 million people in Pakistan’s eastern Punjab province in the past month, health officials said today.

This came as schools across the province were ordered to close for five days to protect children’s health.

Punjab has been struggling to combat smog since last month.

Earlier, officials reported that tens of thousands of people had been treated at hospitals in recent weeks.
