CAMPAIGNERS will mount a “Rachel Reeves Robs Pensioners” protest in the chancellor’s Leeds West constituency tomorrow against cuts to the winter fuel allowance.
Unite Community, which is part of union Unite, is running a nationwide Unite4Energy for All campaign, demanding that the profiteering UK energy industry be nationalised.
The union is also calling for payment of the Winter Fuel Allowance to all pensioners to be restored — not just those who receive benefits.
Unite research has revealed that 14,698 people received the winter fuel allowance in Ms Reeves’s constituency and estimates that 12,807 will lose it — a huge 87.1 per cent.
Tomorrow’s Unite Community protest comes as activists protested outside Ms Reeves’s constituency office last week.
“We asked her constituents what they thought about cutting Winter Fuel Allowance and passed on their comments to the Leeds West MP who made the decision to punish pensioners,” said the union.
“In short they were not happy. One person said ‘I worked till I was 71, leave the pensioners alone. Give back the Winter Fuel Allowance please.’”
Unite Community activist Judy White said: “The cut to the Winter Fuel Allowance is appalling and the consequences will be catastrophic.
“We believe that with decisive government action all deaths from cold homes and fuel poverty can be avoided.”
The union has condemned huge profits made by rip-off energy firms.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Last year alone, private firms reported profits of £45 billion from our country’s domestic energy system.”
She said the profits could have cut almost £2,000 off household energy bills.
Tomorrow’s protest is outside Greggs in Church Lane, Pudsey, from 11am.
