DOZENS of Uber drivers have rallied outside the company’s Glasgow hub as they battle the multinational for fair pay and conditions.
Backed by their union, GMB, drivers argue that the way pay is calculated remains unclear, fuelling uncertainly and frustration as costs rise faster than earnings.
The company uses “surge-pricing” to calculate fares and wages based on instant calculations of drivers available and demand, similar to the “dynamic ticketing” for concerts which has been heavy criticised amid allegations of price gouging.
GMB organiser Paul McLaughlin said: “Our members are committed and skilled drivers working to ensure a first-class service for Uber users.
“The very least they deserve is to be given full and clear information about how fares and earnings are calculated.
“The company must understand the need for that clarity and urgently deliver it.”
Slamming the company’s new “trip radar” system offering multiple drivers the same fares as a “distraction,” which risks safety, Mr McLaughlin added: “The rollout of this system should be paused until the drivers’ concerns are properly addressed.
“The company’s absolute priority must be the safety of our members and every other road user.”
Uber was contacted for comment.
