PEACE campaigners in Wales praised Plaid Cymru’s conference decision today to support their campaign against military radar installations in Pembrokeshire.

The Pembrokeshire Against the Radar Campaign (Parc) hailed the party’s decision to back its campaign and contrasted it with Welsh Labour ignoring the issue.

Parc campaigner Jim Scott said: “The calls for meetings with Welsh Labour... have gone completely unanswered.

“Today sends our clear message that if Labour keeps remaining silent to the calls of over 16,000 people who have signed our local petition, political pressure can and will escalate the issue.”

The nationalist conference debated an emergency motion opposing the Ministry of Defence’s intention to construct a 27-dish United States radar array at Cawdor Barracks in Pembrokeshire.

Mabon ap Gwynfor, Senedd member and chairman of CND Cymru, told delegates that Plaid had helped campaign against a similar radar site in 1990 and should oppose this latest attempt.

“Wales has a proud tradition of standing for peace and we must actively oppose this dangerous development,” Mr ap Gwynfor said.
