LECTURERS at Hull University are to ballot on strike action against job cuts.
The University and College Union (UCU) said management plans to sack up to 127 staff on top of 107 jobs shed through voluntary redundancy.
Balloting begins on Monday and ends on September 27.
UCU accused bosses of “financial mismanagement” after they borrowed £86 million to fund “impossible” plans to make the campus “carbon neutral” by 2027.
UCU general secretary Jo Grady said: “Now, senior leaders expect staff to pay the price for their failed pet projects and financial mismanagement.”
She said the university held £100m in cash reserves, and that “angry” members would vote to strike.
“There is absolutely no need to further cut the academic workforce in this way,” she said.
“Management now needs to halt the redundancies, be honest about its plans and work with us to take a more prudent approach before attempting to slash jobs.”
The university was invited to comment.
