RUSSIA: The Federal Security Service today accused six British diplomats of spying and said that a decision has been made to withdraw their accreditation.
Russian state TV quoted an official from the security service as saying that the diplomats will be expelled from the country.
CANADA: The federal government was urged by business leaders on Thursday to intervene in talks between Air Canada and its pilots to avoid a strike over pay, but the labour minister said that the two sides should negotiate a deal.
Air Canada spokesman Christophe Hennebelle said that the airline is committed to negotiations, but says it can’t meet the wage claim from the Air Line Pilots Association even though it continues to post record profits.
SENEGAL: President Bassirou Diomay Faye dissolved the opposition-led parliament on Thursday to pave the way for a snap legislative election six months after he was voted in on an anti-Establishment platform.
The new election will take place November 17, President Faye said in a televised address in which he asked voters to give his party a mandate so that he can carry out the “systemic transformation that I promised.”
GERMANY: An alleged Islamist extremist has been arrested in connection with plotting an attack on German soldiers during their lunch break in Munich, killing as many of them as possible and causing a feeling of insecurity amongst the larger population, authorities said today.
The suspect was brought before a judge today following his arrest a day earlier, the prosecutor’s office said in a statement. His name was not released in line with German privacy rules.
