ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: Unesco has warned that AI developments could further spread false and misleading information about the Holocaust due to flaws in programmes or through hate groups’ intentional creation of content.

One of the biggest concerns is that AI could be used to create so-called deepfakes of the Holocaust — realistic images or videos used to suggest the atrocities by the Nazis did not happen or were exaggerated.

GERMANY: Eight people accused of involvement in a far-right plot to topple the German government went on trial today in the last round of court hearings in the case.

The six men and two women are charged with “preparation of a high treasonous undertaking” as well as membership in or founding a terrorist organisation following a round-up of dozens of people by German authorities in 2022.

MIGRATION: At least 11 people have died and 64 people from Iran, Syria and Iraq are missing in the Mediterranean Sea after two shipwrecks off Italy’s southern coast and its Lampedusa island.

The first boat had set off from Turkey eight days earlier but caught fire and overturned, while the other — a wooden vessel — flooded leaving people trapped in the lower decks.

LATIN AMERICA: Heavy rainfall and landslides have led to at least seven people killed in El Salvador, including children, and about 10 people died in Ecuador, authorities from both countries said today.

Rescue teams in Ecuador were continuing efforts to remove debris to search for survivors while El Salvador’s government declared an emergency, opening some 100 shelters across the country.
