INDONESIA: Indonesia’s president announced a Cabinet reshuffle today, replacing key economic and security ministers after deadly protests erupted across the country over lawmakers’ perks.
The Cabinet shake-up comes as public dissatisfaction rose with President Prabowo Subianto’s administration.
Five ministers were sacked, including Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, a former World Bank managing director, and Budi Gunawan, the co-ordinating minister for politics and security.
SAMOA: Samoa’s incumbent ruling party will return to power with a new leader after the first woman prime minister was toppled today in elections.
Fast, the former political party of ousted leader Fiame Naomi Mata’afa, will remain in the majority when Parliament resumes in the Pacific Island nation on September 16. But La’aulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Schmidt, who now leads Fast, is expected to be named as the next prime minister.
INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT: ICC prosecutors will present evidence tomorrow to back up charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity against notorious fugitive Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony at the global court’s first-ever in absentia hearing.
Mr Kony faces dozens of counts of crimes against humanity and war crimes, including murder, sexual enslavement and rape for allegedly leading the Lord’s Resistance Army that terrorised northern Uganda.
PAKISTAN: Rescuers backed by troops evacuated more than 25,000 people from a city in Pakistan’s eastern Punjab province overnight as rising rivers threatened to flood the region, officials said today.
The emergency rescue operation in Jalalpur Pirwala began late Sunday and continued through the night, said Irfan Ali Kathia, director-general of the Punjab Disaster Management Authority.
