CHILE: At least two rail workers were killed and nine others injured today after a freight train crashed head-on with another on a test run just outside Santiago in a rare incident in the country.

Police said they were investigating to determine the cause of the collision and had detained the driver of the test train and a railway operator for interrogation on charges of reckless manslaughter.

 

MIGRANTS: A cruise ship rescued 68 people and found the bodies of five others in a wooden dingy that was drifting off the Canary Islands after an oil tanker spotted the boat.

The remains of two people were left at sea during the rescue operation by the Insignia cruise ship, which was diverted by Spanish authorities in the unusual operation, because of bad weather hampering efforts.

 

PERU: Ten men have been convicted for raping nine teenagers while serving in the Peruvian military during the country’s armed conflict with the Shining Path between 1984 and 1994.

The former soldiers will serve sentences ranging between six and 12 years, but the prosecutors and attorneys for the victims, who sought harsher sentences, said they will evaluate the decision and decide whether to challenge it.

 

MONTENEGRO: An explosion in the historical capital Cetnje today killed two people and seriously injured three others, with some of the victims including recently released convicts.

Police said they have launched an investigation into the type and cause of the explosion but local media has suggested that the bomb was linked to the Balkan nation’s criminal gangs and drug smugglers.
