UKRAINE: President Volodymyr Zelensky said today he is ready to drop Ukraine’s Nato bid in exchange for Western security guarantees, but rejected US proposals to cede territory to Russia.
Talks with US envoys and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz focused on peace options, including a proposed demilitarised zone in Donetsk, which Mr Zelensky called unfair.
Overnight, Russia launched missiles and 138 drones at Ukraine, while Ukrainian forces reported hundreds of thousands still without power.
UNITED STATES: Two people were killed and nine were wounded during a shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, on Saturday.
The suspect, a man in dark clothing, remains at large, and students were evacuated from campus buildings while a shelter-in-place order was in effect.
Most victims were students, and authorities are investigating how the shooter accessed the engineering building during finals.
MYANMAR: The military acknowledged an air strike on a hospital in Rakhine state on Saturday that reportedly killed more than 30 people, including patients and medical staff.
The army claimed armed groups used the hospital as a base, but rescuers and media said civilians were among the dead.
The UN and Asean condemned the strike, urging protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure amid ongoing conflict in the region.
SYRIA: US President Donald Trump vowed “very serious retaliation” after two US service members and a US civilian were killed in an Isis-linked attack near Palmyra, Syria.
Three others were wounded, and the gunman was killed. US troops remain deployed in eastern Syria for counter-Isis operations.
Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa expressed outrage over the attack, which occurred in an area outside full government control.
