Workers vow to resist Volkswagen plans to close at least three plants in Germany

WORKERS vowed today that they will resist car-maker Volkswagen’s plans to close at least three plants in Germany.

The head of the company’s works council Daniela Cavallo said management announced plans to close at least three plants during a meeting with VW workers at the company’s Wolfsburg headquarters on Monday, German news agency DPA reported.

VW has about 120,000 employees in 10 plants across Germany.

Ms Cavallo said that “all German VW plants are affected by these plans. None is safe.” She said workers would resist the employer’s plans.

The IG Metall industrial union condemned the plans. Regional leader Thorsten Groger said: “We expect that, instead of cutback fantasies, sustainable plans for the future will be sketched out by Volkswagen and its management at the negotiating table.”

VW said in early September that car industry “headwinds” meant it could not rule out plant closures in its home country and must drop a job protection pledge in force since 1994 that would have barred job cuts through to 2029.
