THE Welsh Parliament has been recalled during its summer break to nominate a new first minister of Wales following Vaughan Gething’s resignation.

Eluned Morgan has succeeded him as the new leader of Welsh Labour and is expected to become first minister of Wales following a formal vote in the Senedd.

In a statement, Mr Gething said: “I have today written to the Llywydd (Presiding Officer), in accordance with standing order 12.3, to request arrangements are made to recall the Senedd on August 6 to nominate a new first minister.

“This is subject to receiving His Majesty the King’s acceptance of my formal offer of resignation.”

Members are to meet in the debating chamber, the Siambr, with the option to also participate virtually, at 11am on August 6.

Welsh Conservatives leader Andrew RT Davies MS said: “I am grateful to the First Minister for heeding Welsh Conservative calls to recall the Senedd to give Wales some much-needed stability.”
