WELSH doctors have called off strikes after accepting improved pay offers from the government, the British Medical Association’s (BMA) announced today.

The union’s consultant, junior doctor and specialist committees all voted in favour of the deals after three junior doctors’ strikes and planned industrial action by senior doctors forced ministers to the negotiating table in April.

Junior doctors’ pay offer rose by 7.4 to 12.4 per cent, backdated to April 2023. 

Consultants accepted a revised pay scale aimed at helping retain senior staff.

SAS (specialist, associate specialist, and specialty) doctors got increases of 6.1-9.2 per cent.

Dr Oba Babs-Osibodu and Dr Peter Fahey, co-chairs of the BMA’s Welsh junior doctors committee, said: “While we are pleased with the progress we have made, the fight for full pay restoration is far from over.”

Welsh First Minister Vaughan Gething said: “We have listened to doctors and negotiated a deal which brings an end to strikes in Wales and ensures doctors are back at work.”
