Wales in brief: June 3, 2025
A view of the Senedd, the Welsh parliament building in Cardiff

LABOUR FIGHT: Three Welsh Labour politicians seeking to save their careers face a selection battle for next year’s Senedd election.

Deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies, Deputy Presiding Officer David Rees and Buffy Williams are competing for the top two spots for the new constituency of Afan Ogwr Rhondda in a selection vote by members.

Welsh Labour can expect to win two seats, but gaining a third would require 36 per cent of voters to back the party.

SMART TECH: Technology is helping to transform care for older people in Wales, helping them stay in their own homes for longer. Innovations developed by Aberystwyth University include voice-activated devices and smart speakers, which remind people to take their medication, have remote GP check-ups and allow care-givers to monitor whether appliances have been left on.

The project uses a range of sensors to collect information and monitors which room a person is in.

GREENWASHING: Campaigners have condemned the new Environment Bill tabled in the Senedd today for a lack of targets to stop nature loss and a three-year timeframe to set legal goals, which they claim will leave Wales with the weakest environmental protection in Britain.

Welsh Green leader Anthony Slaughter said: “This Bill was Labour’s chance to prove its commitment to protecting nature, but instead it has shown how out of touch it is.”

PALESTINE ACTIVISM: Swansea resident Dee Murphy, who has been arrested by Israeli authorities for not leaving a military area and refusing to identify herself to the Israeli army, was moved today from the detention centre in Ben Gurion airport to Givon prison in Ramla.

The 70-year-old grandmother’s lawyer has contacted the relevant authorities in Israel but hasn’t managed to speak to Ms Murphy and is waiting to hear when she will appear before a judge.
