
UKRAINE: Nato secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg warned today that Ukraine is using up ammunition far faster than its allies can supply it, putting pressure on Western arms industries.
He said that President Vladimir Putin has already begun Russia’s long-anticipated spring military offensive, “so we must continue to provide Ukraine with what it needs to win and to achieve a just and sustainable peace.”
CLIMATE CHANGE: Commitments by companies are not always as green as they seem, a new report has found, revealing that major brands are exaggerating how ambitious their efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions are.
Environmental think tanks NewClimate Institute and Carbon Market Watch said that the climate strategies of 23 companies, including Nestle, Carrefour and Volkswagen, were “lacking” and that they were misleading consumers, investors and governments.
PORTUGAL: More than 4,800 people may have been victims of child sex abuse in the country’s Catholic church and 512 alleged victims have already come forward to speak out, an expert panel looking into historic abuse in the church said today.
The statute of limitations has expired on most of the alleged cases and only 25 allegations were passed to prosecutors, the panel said.
NEW ZEALAND: Thousands of people have been left without power as Cyclone Gabrielle lashed the country with torrential rains and winds.
Emergency services have also reported people being trapped by the rising waters, including a family stranded on a flooded highway. The storm is expected to peak tonight and continue until Tuesday.
