Kurds celebrate sixth World Kobane Day
The event pays tribute to the resistance that led to the defeat of Isis in the northern Syrian city

KURDS and their supporters celebrated World Kobane Day today, marking the sixth anniversary of the resistance that led to the defeat of Isis in the northern Syrian city, turning the tide against the jihadists.

Demonstrations were held in major towns and cities across Europe to protest against Turkey’s continued occupation of parts of the north Syrian enclave known as Rojava, which it has flooded with jihadists, committing war crimes and other atrocities.

But Democratic Union Party (PYD) co-chair Ehmed Sexo, who was one of the organisers of the resistance, said Ankara’s aim of crushing the Kurdish people would be defeated.

“We will destroy the goals and dreams of the Turkish state with the resistance and the solidarity of the peoples,” he said.

The largely Kurdish city of Kobane in northern Syria was held under siege by Isis for 134 days during the autumn and winter of 2014.

Jailed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Ocalan warned at the time that “the fall of Kobane means the fall of all of Kurdistan” and urged people to step up the resistance.

The city’s defence became a focal point in the global fight against Isis, with the Kurdish people’s protection units (YPG) waging a heroic fight against the jihadists that was likened to the battles for Stalingrad and Jarama.

Despite the Turkish state blocking aid and supplies from reaching Kobane and stopping Kurds from crossing the border to support the resistance, Kurdish forces defeated Isis, and the death cult’s forces fled the city on January 26 2015.

Mr Sexo insisted that Turkey was behind the siege and attack on the people of Kobane, who he said had surprised everyone with their resistance.

“All was blown off course. The Kobane resistance drew the attention of the world — they too supported this resistance,” he said. “Terrorism, which has plagued the world, was defeated in Kobane and gradually destroyed.”

But he warned that Turkey is trying to finish the job that Isis could not through its war in northern Syria on Afrin, Serekaniye and Gire Spi, saying the “new wave of attacks” is no different from that of the jihadists.

“No matter how it changed its name, colour and shape, this is the truth. The attack against Rojava is an attack against the world,” Mr Sexo said, warning that Turkey would fail to crush the Kurdish resistance.
