India and Pakistan both claim to have intercepted drones in Kashmir

TENSIONS appeared in danger of escalating between Pakistan and India today after both countries claimed to have intercepted drones in the contested Kashmir region.

India’s army reportedly foiled an attempt by Pakistan to send a drone to the border area.

Earlier, Pakistan’s military claimed an Indian spy drone had been shot down along the Line of Control which separates the Indian and Pakistani sections of the disputed Kashmir regions.

India’s armed forces have been on high alert after intelligence suggested a deployment of armed drones would be sent to the border area this week.

In the last few weeks at least six Pakistani drones are believed to have entered the area with two shot down after reportedly violating Indian airspace.

The nuclear powers have been at loggerheads since jihadist militants killed 40 Indian soldiers in a suicide attack in February. India holds the Pakistani government responsible for the killings giving security forces free rein to respond to the attacks.

An Indian pilot shot down over Pakistan was handed back as a “peace offering” by Prime Minister Imran Khan earlier this month but relations continue to simmer.

Mr Khan has pushed for talks with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi saying both nations “have to live in peace.”
