Vigil to be held in Leicester following rape and murder of Kolkata doctor
Engineers and engineering students attend a protest against the rape and killing of a trainee doctor at a government hospital, in Kolkata, India, August 21, 2024

A CANDLELIT vigil is due to be held in Leicester on Saturday following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in India’s Kolkata city earlier this month.

Organised by the Indian Workers Association and Kohinoor Radio, the vigil will take place at the radio station’s conference hall on Saviour Road.

It will be broadcast live in Leicester on 97.3FM and globally on krfm.co.uk.

The vigil will raise awareness and seek justice following the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate doctor at the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, on August 9.

Sanjoy Roy, a police volunteer, has been arrested and charged with the crime.

The victim cannot be named under Indian law.

The murder sparked protests in several cities and doctors belonging to several associations went on strike for 11 days demanding justice.

Sexual violence is widespread in India, where an average of 90 rapes were reported each day in 2022, according to government data.
