Union fringe meeting promotes Welsh language in the workplace

TUC Cymru took its campaign encouraging Welsh in the workplace to the Maes today for the Eisteddfod.

The fringe panel included Welsh language commissioner Efa Gruffudd Jones, WTUC president Sian Gale, PCS union steward Ian Thompson and TUC Cymru’s Welsh language officer Mandy James.

Ms Gale explained what the union movement was doing in Wales to promote the Welsh language at work.

She said: “Our name change to TUC Cymru shows our commitment to the language, and we are providing Welsh lessons to our staff.

“TUC Cymru has had three fringe meetings at this year’s Eisteddfod and hopefully, next year, we will have a stand on the Maes.”

Ms Jones paid tribute to the work unions have put into promoting the language, especially as there is not a statutory commitment for them.

“I am proud the unions are embracing the Welsh language standards and my office will help any union seeking to improve its language offer to its members,” she said.
