THE TUC agreed today to move from its historic Congress House headquarters.
It will now seek a buyer for the grade II-listed building and look to purchase a new fit-for-purpose replacement, subject to final authorisation from its general council and executive committee next month.
TUC general secretary Paul Nowak said: “Congress House was built as a monument to trade unionists who died during both world wars. It has served as a fantastic home for our movement.
“The decision to look to move from Congress House has been an incredibly difficult one. But we feel it is in the best interests of the TUC — and the millions of working people we serve and represent — for us to find a new home for trade unionism.
“The TUC’s role is to be the be the voice of working people. Our commercial and property activity has always existed to serve this greater purpose. We must always put the needs of unions and their members first.
“We have consulted with our staff, affiliates and experts at every stage of this process to ensure we make the best decision for our movement.”
The decision follows a review by its finance committee.
Congress House has been the headquarters of the TUC since 1958.
