Three union leaders recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours

THREE union leaders have been included in the King’s Birthday Honours.

The Communication Workers Union’s general secretary Dave Ward has been made a CBE for services to trade unions.

NASUWT’s recently retired general secretary Dr Patrick Roach is made a CBE for services to education.

And Prospect deputy general secretary Sue Ferns is made an OBE for services to green jobs and workplace transition.

Mr Ward said: “The New Deal for Workers campaign was founded and led by the CWU,” saying its role in leading to the current Employment Rights Bill was what was really being recognised.

Dr Roach, who became head of the union at the start of the first national lockdown and was head of the TUC’s anti-racism taskforce, said: “I am humbled and incredibly proud to be granted this honour.”

Ms Ferns, who has also been a member of the TUC general council since 2005, said: “I am privileged to have spent my career in the trade union movement, determined to make a positive difference to the lives of working people.”
