Symposium at Marx Memorial Library to mark 40 years since Wapping dispute
Crowds assembled in Trafalgar Square, London, for the union rally in support of the workers sacked in the print union dispute with Rupert Murdoch's News International, April 6, 1986

THE Marx Memorial Library & Workers’ School (MML) will host an all-day symposium next month to mark 40 years since the 1986 Wapping dispute.

The event on January 24 will feature speeches from sacked workers and specialists Professor Ruth Dukes, Granville Williams (Media North), film-maker and author Morag Livingstone and Morning Star editor Ben Chacko.

The Wapping dispute began when Rupert Murdoch’s News International moved production overnight to a fortified plant in east London, demanding worsened terms and dismissing more than 5,500 print workers.

MML is home to a major archive documenting the dispute, and as the library completes a two-year cataloguing project, and January will see the launch of a new index, opening an important collection to researchers for the first time.
