Stephen Fry urges public to lobby government to protect Britain's oceans

ACTOR and comedian Stephen Fry has backed a conservation charity campaign calling for government action to save Britain’s oceans in its first 100 days in office.

Throwing his support behind the Blue Marine Foundation’s newly launched Seas the Day campaign, he urged constituents across the country to contact their local MP and ask them to pledge three main actions to help.

They are calling for a ban on bottom-trawling in marine protected areas, ending overfishing by bringing fishing catch limits within scientific advice and addressing social inequality by reforming how quotas are allocated in British fishing.

In a video shared online and social media today, Mr Fry said: “Our oceans sustain all life on Earth as we know it.

“Not only does it provide us with food, but it helps stabilise the climate, ensuring life on Earth as we know it. But it needs our help.”

The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs has been contacted for comment.
