MEN’S BASKETBALL: LeBron James celebrated his third Olympic title as the United States beat hosts France 98-87 to win men’s basketball gold for a fifth successive Games.

James, 39, back on the Olympic stage for the first time since London 2012, finished with 14 points, 10 assists and six rebounds to underpin the American performance.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Callum McGregor reminded watching Scotland manager Steve Clarke what he will be missing with a spectacular goal in Celtic’s dominant 2-0 victory over Hibernian at Easter Road.

The 31-year-old midfielder struck into the top corner from nearly 30 yards two days after announcing his retirement from international football.

Nicolas Kuhn had given Celtic an early lead which they never looked like relinquishing as Hibs struggled to make inroads on Kasper Schmeichel’s goal until the latter stages.

WOMEN’S CRICKET: Scotland claimed a four-wicket victory yesterday over Papua New Guinea in their one-day international tri-nations series match in Amstelveen.

Saskia Horley starred for Scotland as they bounced back from their narrow defeat to Netherlands last time out.

Darcey Carter, who scored 86 against Netherlands, and Katherine Fraser both scored 18 to confirm the win, with more than 22 overs to spare.

OLYMPICS: World Athletics chief Lord Coe stopped short of officially declaring his candidacy for International Olympic Committee president yesterday but revealed he would “of course” consider running for the soon-to-be vacated role.

Thomas Bach, the current IOC president, revealed on Saturday he would stand down after his second term ends in 2025 despite calls from some corners for him to consider an extension that would allow him to stay in office longer.
