Luke Littler, Jamuary 3, 2025

DARTS: Hours before teenager Luke Littler won the World Matchplay title with an 18-13 victory over James Wade at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens, 54-year-old Lisa Ashton bagged a 6-5 tie-break win against Fallon Sherrock to pick up the women’s trophy on Sunday.

Sherrock, the only woman to have ever won a match at the PDC world Championships, had earlier missed eleven darts at a double to seal the title.

SPEEDWAY: Britain took the bronze medal at this weekend’s Europe’s under 24s championship in Macon, France.

The squad of Leon Flint, Dan Thompson (both Glasgow), Sam Hagon (Leicester and Berwick), Luke Harrison (Scunthorpe) and Jake Mulford (Redcar) finished 25 points behind new champions Poland who edged out runners-up Denmark by three points.

Glasgow rider Villads Nagel top-scored for the Danes with 12 points.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Reigning National League champions Barnet kick-start this year’s English League Cup with a preliminary round fixture against Newport County at their Hive stadium tomorrow evening.

Fellow newly promoted club Oldham also face a qualifying round tie against Accrington Stanley.

The extra round has been introduced to make room for the nine Premier League clubs playing European football this season to enter in the third round.

WOMEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Wigan remain three points clear at the top of the Super League after maintaining their unbeaten record with a 30-16 win over Leeds.

Second-placed St Helens, who have a game in hand and are also unbeaten, were handed the points from their game with bottom club Warrington, who forfeited due to a lack of players.

In Sunday’s other matches, York saw off Huddersfield 26-6 and Barrow edged Leigh 16-10.
