Sport in brief with Jamie J: April 17, 2024

CYCLING: Canada, Germany and Britain are the only nations to have qualified the maximum number of riders for this year’s Paris Olympics track events. There will again be six-medal contests for men and women at the games with endurance omnium, team pursuit and madison finals alongside the team sprint, keirin and individual sprints. Britain won seven medals, including three golds, on the track in Tokyo three years ago.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Aston Villa take a slender 2-1 advantage to Lille, who are unbeaten in their last 15 home games, as all of tomorrow evening’s Europa Conference League quarter-final second leg ties remain on a knife edge. Olympiacos lead Fenerbahce 3-2, Benfica are 2-1 up on Marseille and it’s all square at 0-0 between Fiorentina and Viktoria Plzen, who haven’t conceded a goal in Europe for nearly 700 minutes.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Larne took a big step towards retaining their Irish Premiership title after an added time own goal handed them a 2-1 success at Glentoran on Tuesday night and second-placed Linfield were denied by Matthew Shevlin’s 97th-minute equaliser for Coleraine in a 2-2 draw. The top two meet in Belfast on Monday but with just two games to go Larne lead by three points and have a vastly superior goal difference.

SPEEDWAY: After their fixture at Belle Vue was postponed due to the wet conditions earlier in the week King’s Lynn take their search for a first Premiership win of the season to reigning champions Sheffield tomorrow evening. Elsewhere it’s first against second when Ipswich host league leaders Oxford and Belle Vue travel to Leicester, who beat Birmingham 43-29 in a rain shortened meeting on Monday.
