SNP vows to force Westminster vote on recognising Palestine's statehood
Leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) John Swinney gives a speech at the launch of the SNP's General Election campaign at the Apex Grassmarket Hotel in Edinburgh, May 23, 2024

RISHI SUNAK and Sir Keir Starmer may be forced into a binding vote over recognising Palestine after the general election, SNP leader John Swinney warned today.

The Scottish First Minister has written to the Prime Minister and Labour leader urging them to do “the right thing” and pledge to recognise Palestine’s statehood “immediately.”

He said:  “I am calling on the UK to follow the lead of Ireland, Norway and Spain by immediately recognising Palestine as a state — and if Rishi Sunak will not do it now, Keir Starmer must commit to doing so on his first day in Downing Street.

“If you will not immediately commit to doing so, I can confirm that SNP MPs will bring forward a binding vote in the House of Commons at the first possible opportunity after the general election.”

A Labour Party spokesman said it will work “alongside international partners to recognise the state of Palestine alongside the state of Israel, as part of efforts to contribute to securing a negotiated two-state solution.”

The government has been asked for comment.
