Scotland's workers demand better, say STUC
STUC General Secretary Roz Foyer speaks to lecturers and other university staff at a rally on Buchanan Street, Glasgow, September 19, 2023

THE STUC has called on all parties to get behind its six key demands for the next UK government.

Representing Scotland’s labour movement, which has seen membership grow by 30,000 to 664,000 over the last year, the STUC urged the scrapping of all anti-trade union legislation.

Full implementation of Labour’s New Deal for Workers, which would bring in full employment rights from day one, sectoral bargaining and an end to both zero-hours contracts and fire-and-rehire, were also among its six demands.

In addition, the STUC called on the next government to increase taxation of wealth, boost investment in the green economy and public services and give support to the people of Palestine.

General secretary Roz Foyer said: “Without question, workers in Scotland can play a pivotal role in determining the outcome of the general election.
“This campaign has been mired by the politics of hatred, division and scapegoating.

“We need candidates to reject these values and to stand beside our growing movement, which seeks to bring positive, transformational change across our communities.

“This election needs to make a difference for workers. They need action.

“Our plan shows what needs to be done.”
