RMT leader Mick Lynch backs Jeremy Corbyn for MP

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch urged residents of Islington North to vote for Jeremy Corbyn as an independent candidate at his campaign’s closing rally last night.

The union leader, who has otherwise encouraged people around the country to vote Labour, joined speakers backing the socialist former party leader at the event.

They included Guardian columnist Owen Jones and former senior members of the constituency’s Labour Party, who have resigned en masse to support Mr Corbyn as an independent candidate.

Mr Corbyn, who has represented Islington North for more than 40 years, said: “We have built this campaign from nothing. We don’t have party machinery. We don’t have big donors. But we have something more powerful: people — and tomorrow is our chance to make history, together.

“I will be your independent voice in Parliament — and we must win to stop the privatisation of our NHS, oppose the genocide in Gaza and offer a real alternative.”
