Rally called outside Holyrood against cuts to culture and arts

MEMBERS of performing arts union Equity will rally outside the Scottish Parliament on Thursday in protest at cuts to vital funding for Scotland’s creative and cultural activities.

Equity says the Scottish government has pledged to increase culture funding by £100 million over the next five years.

But a £6m “open fund,” which supports artists, writers, producers and others is to close due to lack of Scottish government funding.

Equity Scotland official Marlene Curran said: “I am deeply concerned about what these latest cuts means for the regularly funded budget due to be announced in October.”

She said the Scottish Parliament has the powers to tax wealth.

“It is up to ministers to act,” she said. “These cuts are a political choice.

“We will fight these cuts every step of the way and hold the government to its word that it would increase, not cut, funding.”

The rally starts at 12.30pm.
