NUJ calls for Apple to withdraw AI from its phones

JOURNALISTS today called on Apple to remove its artificial intelligence (AI) feature from its smartphones warning of its harm to journalism.

The National Union of Journalists urged tech giant Apple to remove its AI feature, which the company calls Apple Intelligence, after inaccurate news alerts on its latest iPhones.

The product is meant to summarise breaking news notifications but, in some cases, the technology has invented entirely false claims.

The NUJ said that inaccurate reporting by Apple included a false story that the BBC had reported the suicide of Luigi Mangione, who is accused of killing United HealthCare CEO Brian Thompson.

NUJ general secretary Laura Davison said: “Apple must act swiftly, removing Apple Intelligence.

“At a time where access to accurate reporting has never been more important, the public must not be placed in a position of second-guessing the accuracy of news they receive.”

Apple has said it plans to update the feature to clarify when notifications are summarised with AI but journalists say this will not fix the issue of false reporting.
