NEW Ukip leader Richard Braine warned the public of the growth of “international Marxism” and suggested a Quran ban yesterday.

Speaking to Sky News, Mr Braine began by saying he does not care who delivers Brexit as long as it is “real Brexit, not fake Brexit.”

He said Britain needed independence not only from the EU but also other forces, adding: “We see already the growth of international Marxism and the threat of Jeremy Corbyn.”

Communist Party of Britain general secretary Rob Griffiths said: “This confirms Ukip's decent into the pit of national chauvinism and religious bigotry.

“Hopefully the next election should wipe out Ukip entirely.

“And those of us who continue to campaign against the neoliberal, pro-big businesses and increasingly militarist EU can do so without any taint or association with the likes of Richard Braine.”

Mr Braine is the eighth party leader since the Brexit referendum in 2018 after Gerard Batten was barred from standing for re-election following Ukip’s failure to hold any MEP seats in May.

Dubbed “Dick Braine” on social media, Mr Braine then went on to tell Sky News that Britain needed to look into whether handing out Islam’s holy book, the Quran, in public should be illegal.

Mr Braine said there was “no question” that Islamic scripture encouraged people to be “violent and murderous.”

Comparing Islam in Britain to Scientology in Germany, Mr Braine said “we should be able to look into if religions or cults incite violence.”

Banning the Quran is not a new idea for Mr Braine who last month said that handing out copies of the Quran should be illegal under laws connected to incitement to violence.

A spokesman for the Muslim Council of Britain said: “Ukip’s continued descent into even greater depths of bigotry is only matched by its growing irrelevance and obscurity.

“Virulent Islamophobia was not a successful tactic under the previous Ukip leadership, and will not be this time. Our nation knows better.”

Before being appointed the new leader, Mr Braine tweeted that he often confuses the London Mayor Sadiq Khan with 7/7 bombing leader Mohammad Sidique Khan.

Screenshots of the tweet mocking the Labour MP re-emerged this week following Mr Braine’s new role.
