EUROPE’S largest nuclear plant was attacked by drones again today, posing no direct threat to its safety but underscoring the “extremely serious situation” at the facility in Ukraine, the United Nations has said.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said its team was aware of an explosion at a training centre next to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant today. 

The plant is one of the 10 biggest nuclear facilities in the world.

The UN agency posted on X, formerly Twitter, that it understood the explosion at the plant was caused by a drone attack but gave no further details.

Earlier in the week the IAEA said its inspectors had confirmed “the physical impact of drone detonations” on Sunday and watched as “Russian troops engaged what appeared to be an approaching drone.”

Moscow alleged Ukraine was behind Sunday’s drone attacks on the facility. But Kiev accused Russia of disinformation.

Energoatom, the Ukrainian nuclear plant operator, slammed Russia’s latest allegations in a statement, accusing Moscow of publishing propaganda and false statements to manipulate public opinion.

While the most recent strikes did not compromise the facility, the IAEA has repeatedly expressed alarm about the plant amid fears of a nuclear catastrophe.
