Morton double salvages point for GB men against the Netherlands
Lee Morton (second right) celebrates with teammates after scoring a goal during the men's field hockey match between Britain and Netherlands at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium, at the 2024 Summer Olympics, July 30, 2024, in Colombes, France

LEE MORTON’S fourth quarter brace rescued a point for Team GB as they came back to draw 2-2 with the Netherlands today.

It was goalless at half-time but the Netherlands soon took the lead through Floris Wortelboer and Thijs van Dam.

However, another late show from Team GB saw Morton strike twice in the final quarter to salvage a point, meaning they now sit third in Pool A.

The Netherlands heaped some early pressure on Great Britain, who grew into the game with some good spells of possession, but they struggled to threaten the Dutch defence.

Van Dam nearly had a chance to put the Netherlands ahead when he received a neat cross from Tjep Hoedemakers on the wing, but after making a great turn in the centre of the circle, the forward could only fire wide.

Ollie Payne made a great save to his right to deny Jip Janssen from the penalty corner in the second quarter and Great Britain had a chance of their own from a penalty corner, but Pirmin Blaak made a brilliant save with his stick to push the ball away from David Ames’s shot.

Team GB came close in the third quarter when a low shot whistled across the face of goal before Blaak was called into action to make a double save from Samuel Ward’s close range efforts.

The Netherlands broke the deadlock with one minute to go in the third quarter after Payne made another important stop from Van Dam, but Floris Wortelboer pounced on the ball and smashed it into the bottom corner.

They then extended their lead in the fourth quarter when Hoedemakers’s shot was deflected into the bottom corner by Van Dam.

Team GB kept pushing for a late comeback and after having a shot saved, Morton struck moments later when his effort smashed off the post and into the net.

Following a spell of pressure in the final minutes, Morton grabbed an equaliser for Great Britain, firing a loose ball from the penalty corner past Blaak.

Team GB now look ahead and prepare for their clash with hosts France, due to get underway at 11.45am tomorrow.
