THE last scheduled day of a four-day truce between Israel and Hamas in Gaza begins tomorrow after Egypt confirmed receipt of the lists of names for a third round of prisoner exchanges.
It could be extended, Israel says, by a day for every extra 10 hostages freed by Hamas on top of the 50 agreed to in return for the release of 150 Palestinians by Israel.
The second round of releases was delayed for a few hours on Saturday as Hamas accused Israel of failing to abide by conditions over access for aid and fuel into Gaza, but the dispute was resolved and the Palestinian group released 13 Israeli citizens and four Thais in return for the release of 39 Palestinians.
The truce largely held, though the Palestinian Red Crescent said Israeli forces fired at two farmers in central Gaza today, killing one. An Israeli military spokesperson denied knowledge.
Hamas also confirmed the death during the conflict of one of its most senior military chiefs, Ahmed al-Ghandour, who was in charge of its operations in northern Gaza, where the Israeli invasion has focused. He was killed alongside three other high-ranking officials, including Ayman Siam, who Israel says was in charge of its rocket-firing operations.
Released Palestinian prisoners have given multiple interviews to journalists, unlike the freed hostages. Israel’s Channel 12 reported that the hostages were being briefed by authorities on what to say to the media after embarrassment upon the release of 85-year-old Yochaved Lifshitz, who described her captors as gentle.
