A LONDON NHS trust and a former ward manager will stand trial for the manslaughter of 22-year-old Alice Figueiredo in a first-of-its-kind case.
Figueiredo died on July 7 2015, while she was a mental health inpatient at Goodmayes Hospital, run by North East London NHS Foundation Trust (NELFT).
The trust and the ward manager at the time of Figueiredo’s death, Benjamin Aninakwa, will stand trial for their actions in relation to her death.
NELFT is charged with corporate manslaughter as well as a health and safety breach.
Mr Aninakwa is charged with manslaughter by gross negligence and a health-and-safety breach.
The charges were announced by the Crown Prosecution Service following a Metropolitan police investigation into Figueiredo’s death.
This is the first time an NHS trust has been charged with corporate manslaughter over a death in a mental health unit.
The trial opens on October 29 and is expected to last nine weeks.
