Kemi Badenoch to review withdrawing from the ECHR
Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch during her visit to Farleigh Hospice in Chelmsford, Essex, May 9, 2025

TORY leader Kemi Badenoch is expected to announce a review into whether Britain should withdraw from the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) in a speech tomorrow.

Her senior party colleague Robert Jenrick championed the idea during last year’s Conservative leadership election campaign.

Article eight of the convention, protecting the right to a family life, has frustrated attempts to deport foreign criminals.

Ms Badenoch suggested In February that Britain would “probably” have to withdraw from the convention if it stopped this country doing “what is right."

When the government released its white paper on immigration last month, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said that the “the right balance” must be struck between individual rights and “the national interest.”

Ministers promised legislation to “strengthen the public interest test to make it clear that Parliament needs to be able to control our country’s borders and take back control over who comes to and stays in the UK.”
