WORLD number 19 Daria Kasatkina has ended her season early after admitting she is at “breaking point.”
Kasatkina, who has struggled for form this year, described the tennis schedule as “too much, mentally and emotionally.”
The openly gay 28-year-old switched nationality from Russia to Australia in March, having criticised her country’s LGBTQ+ laws and the war in Ukraine.
She is at her lowest ranking since May 2022, with her last match a 6-3 6-0 defeat to Britain’s Sonay Kartal in the second round of the China Open on Saturday, September 27.
“I’ve been far from fine for a long time and truth be told, my results and performances show that, the fans aren’t stupid, they can see it too,” Kasatkina posted on X.
“I’ve kept a lid on my feelings because I don’t want to seem like I am moaning, weak or God forbid ungrateful or unappreciative of this amazing life we live as professional tennis players.
“Truth is, I’ve hit a wall and I can’t continue. I need a break.
“The schedule is too much, mentally and emotionally I am at breaking point and sadly, I am not alone.”
Kasatkina said the emotional stress of her nationality switch contributed to her struggles, including not seeing her father for four years.
Former top-five players Elina Svitolina and Paula Badosa each ended their seasons early in recent weeks.
Kasatkina, who has won eight career WTA titles, is focused on being fit for the start of next season.
“I am joining the 2025 tap out club,” she said. “I will be just fine though, and look forward to seeing you all in 2026, energised and ready to rock!!”
