Just Stop Oil paint the town orange after winning first demand

JUST Stop Oil supporters painted Parliament Square orange today to celebrate their success after the British government agreed to end all new licences and consents for fossil fuel exploration and extraction.

Four activists poured orange paint across three intersections leading into Parliament Square after securing the commitment, which activists had been campaigning for since February 2022.

Deborah Wilde, a 68-year-old retired teacher who took part in the action, said: “The evidence is in, and disruptive civil resistance gets the goods!

“For two-and-a-half years, Just Stop Oil supporters have been taking action to force the debate around new oil and gas up the news agenda and to the forefront of voter’s minds.”

She called on Labour to next cancel all fossil fuel licences green-lit by the Tories before leaving office.

The group are now demanding the government sign a legally binding international treaty to put an end to the burning of oil, gas and coal by 2030.
