Iraq: Flights halted after Kurds vote for state
Baghdad and Ankara punish region over independence bid

Most airlines serving Iraq's Kurdistan region will stop their flights from tonight in response to this week’s independence referendum.

Hundreds of passengers, mainly foreign visitors, waited to board flights out of Irbil International Airport yesterday before the ban, ordered by the Iraqi Transport Ministry earlier in the day, comes into effect.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said neighbouring Turkey had agreed to only buy oil from the hydrocarbon-rich region through the federal government.
