Indian Workers Association calls for inquiry into Indian restaurant fire

CAMPAIGNERS called for an inquiry today following a suspected arson attack on an Indian restaurant in east London.

The Indian Workers Association (IWA) said it was “appalled and deeply distressed” by the incident at Indian Aroma on Woodford Avenue in Gants Hill, Ilford.

Flames engulfed the restaurant around 9pm last Friday, causing severe damage and injuring five people, three of whom remain in a life-threatening condition.

A 54-year-old man and a boy of 15 have been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

The association is calling for “a full and transparent inquiry” into the motive for the fire and for those responsible to be held fully accountable.

It also wants improved protection and support for the Indian community, stronger action against the spread of disinformation and a national strategy to combat systemic racism and xenophobia through public education and legislation.

An IWA statement said: “We strongly condemn this violent and targeted attack against an Indian restaurant and extend our heartfelt solidarity and support to the restaurant staff, the injured individuals and their families.

“While investigations are ongoing, the circumstances cannot be dismissed lightly.

“We call for a swift, thorough and transparent inquiry into whether racial prejudice played any part in this atrocity.”
