Blairite MP Chris Leslie told to ‘consider his position’

SENIOR Labour figures in Nottingham have told Blairite MP Chris Leslie to “consider your position” if he continues attacking Jeremy Corbyn.

Nottingham City Council leader Jon Collins was among the 82  members who called for Mr Leslie to display more loyalty to the Labour Party, alongside other prominent Labour councillors.

The letter, which was addressed to Mr Leslie last night, expressed the “disappointment” of local members over his criticism of Mr Corbyn in the media.

“We believe they were likely to damage the reputation and electoral prospects of our party,” they wrote.

The letter recognised that Labour has always been a “broad church,” but pointed out that “we, as party members, expect our elected representatives to have an unfailing commitment to getting Labour into government, so that we can put our values into practice.

“This is our minimum expectation of you in your role as our Labour MP.”

Citing the rise in homelessness and the collapse in NHS funding, the letter reminded Mr Leslie that Labour supporters in his constituency of Nottingham East want him to “speak for us and help promote Labour values” on a local and national scale.

The letter also criticised Mr Leslie’s lack of attention to local affairs and his inability to hold regular surgeries.

“We believe that the support you give constituents and party members in Nottingham East is well below that of other local Labour MPs,” the letter continues.

“We note that you appear to have held a surgery in a local Sainsbury’s where little to no notice was given to constituents or members.

“Whilst this is some improvement over your long-term reluctance to hold any surgery at all, it is not good enough.”

Following the June 2017 general election, over 600 Labour members in Nottingham East signed an open letter calling for Mr Leslie to “consolidate the united campaigning force that we have built in this election campaign” and to fight more strongly for a Labour government.

Mr Leslie, who has been contacted for comment, has been a long-term critic of Mr Corbyn. He is widely expected to be deselected.

Blairite MP Luciana Berger’s future career also seemed unclear after her local Labour Party called for a no-confidence vote.

The executive of Liverpool Wavertree CLP is holding extraordinary general meeting next weekend with two motions, both of which are for no-confidence votes against the beleaguered Corbynsceptic.
