Gething's budget at risk as Lib Dems join parties set to vote against minority government
First Minister of Wales Vaughan Gething speaks at the launch of Labour's six steps for change in Wales at the Priory Centre in Abergavenny, while on the General Election campaign trail, May 30, 2024

EMBATTLED Vaughan Gething’s Budget is at risk after the Lib Dems “categorically” ruled out supporting it today.

The Welsh First Minister’s Labour Party is one short of a majority in the Senedd after controversy over donations to his leadership campaign led to the collapse of its co-operation agreement with Plaid Cymru.

He has refused to resign after losing a no-confidence vote in the Senedd earlier this month.

Mr Gething now faces increased pressure after the parliament’s only Lib Dem member Jane Dodds joined other opposition groups threatening to vote down his autumn Budget.

She said: “The Welsh Liberal Democrats will not support Labour in passing their Budget. Vaughan Gething lost a motion of no confidence in the Senedd and should act accordingly.

“Labour’s accusations that this is all a ‘gimmick’ simply aren’t true. I have never backed a motion of no confidence before, it wasn’t an easy decision for me to make.”
