Edinburgh Tram workers win right to break following strike threat

TRAM drivers in Edinburgh have won the right to park up for a pee — but had to threaten strike action to get it.

Unite represents drivers, ticket service assistants, controllers and vehicle maintenance workers on the Edinburgh Trams network.

The union said staff shortages and running times on late night services serving the city’s airport meant that drivers were unable to take a break.

Management refused to take action to solve the problem and drivers responded by voting overwhelmingly for strike action.

Now management have agreed to rest and comfort breaks.

Unite industrial officer Lyn Turner said: “Edinburgh’s tram workers were forced to threaten industrial action following legitimate concerns around rest and comfort breaks, which angered our members.

“Appropriate running times should have been negotiated.

“Unite is pleased that the dispute is over, but anyone with an ounce of basic decency knows it should not have come to this in the first place.”

Edinburgh Trams was contacted for comment.
