DUTCH union organisers today launched Strike Map Netherlands (Stakingskaart), bringing the British-born Strike Map project to the continent for the first time.

Michel Eggermont of Dutch union FNV Rail said activists there had been “impressed with the developments of Strike Map from afar.

“We believe there is a real need to produce more information about what strikes are happening across the Netherlands [so we can] co-ordinate better solidarity activity.

“We look forward to developing our map in partnership with Strike Map.”

Strike Map co-founder Henry Fowler said the development was “really exciting.

“In a very short period of time powered and financed by workers and their unions, Strike Map has been able to encourage over two million people to visit our website and hundreds of thousands of returning users. 

“We have for a long time worked with sister projects across the globe, and have developed our map to enable it to be international, meaning any country from around the world can submit strikes to it. We hope to see more international expansion in the future.”

Alongside developing a map of industrial action, Strike Map has built a reps network for workplace union stewards and branch officers to be a part of, as well as regional Strike Clubs providing local spaces for those to co-ordinate picket visits and solidarity work. 

The latest development of Strike Map has been the Industrial Unionism pamphlet series, which alongside Manifesto Press has published historic texts such as The Workers’ Committee by JT Murphy and The Miners’ Next Step by the unofficial reform committee of the National Union of Mineworkers.
